Maths Excellence Programme - Keele Masterclass

Fourteen students from Co-op Academy Stoke-on-Trent recently had an exciting visit to Keele University in Staffordshire, participating in a Masterclass organised as part of the Maths Excellence Programme.

Their day started by immersing themselves in the fascinating world of codes and cryptology. They explored key techniques like Caesar ciphers and indecipherable ciphers, learning exactly how messages are encrypted and secured. The session brought the digital world to life, showing them how to lock messages and keep private information safe on messaging platforms and online. This was made practical with a hands-on exercise using a treasure box and padlocks, which helped model everything from digital security to protecting payment details from scammers. Three students, Kingsley, Adam, and Hanif, were happy to volunteer and earned themselves a chocolate treat!

Next, the group was treated to a full tour of the Keele campus, giving them a real sense of student life outside the academic environment. They particularly enjoyed seeing all the social and recreational areas, including the ballroom venue where many amazing artists have performed over the years.

They rounded off the day by delving into computer and data science. This gave them a chance to test their problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and complex analytical abilities. The session concluded with a look at history, discussing how Mary, Queen of Scots attempted her famous escape from prison using the Caesar Cipher, before the students put their own skills into practice by trying to break a code themselves. The entire day was a brilliant opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world applications and inspiring career paths.
