From Stoke To Tokyo: A Trip We’ll Never Forget

Earlier this month, a group of our students returned from an unforgettable visit to Japan, funded by the Turing Scheme with additional support from the Academy – ensuring the trip was completely free of charge for the students involved.

The Turing Scheme is a UK government programme that supports schools in offering international travel opportunities to help students build life skills, broaden their horizons, and gain confidence in new environments. For many of our students, this was their first time travelling so far from home – and they embraced every challenge with real maturity and enthusiasm.

The group spent a week in and around Tokyo, one of the world’s most fast-paced and fascinating cities. From the moment they stepped on the plane, they did the school proud. Airline staff described them as the best school group they’d ever seen – and that level of respect, curiosity and positive attitude continued throughout the week.

Students explored cultural landmarks like the Meiji Shrine, Imperial Palace Gardens, and Sensoji Temple, while also getting a taste of modern Tokyo in districts like Akihabara, Shibuya, and Shinjuku. They mastered the Tokyo subway system, visited museums and galleries, and even travelled up to the 5th Station of Mount Fuji – standing among the clouds at over 2,000 metres.

They took in the sights from the top of Tokyo Tower, wandered through TeamLab’s immersive digital art exhibition, and enjoyed moments of calm by Lake Kawaguchiko and in local parks. Everywhere they went, they represented the Academy with pride.

But the real value of the trip lay beyond the itinerary. Over the course of the week, students developed independence, resilience, teamwork, and confidence. They supported one another, reflected thoughtfully on what they saw and experienced, and showed a genuine interest in Japanese culture and history. They stepped outside their comfort zones and came back stronger for it.

The trip ended with a moving farewell from our guide, Saya, who told us – through tears – that our group was the best international school group she had ever worked with. The students were just as emotional, showing how much of an impact the week had made.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms Williamson, Assistant Headteacher, said:
“This wasn’t a holiday. It was an education in the fullest sense of the word. Our students spent the week navigating unfamiliar places, engaging with a different culture, and pushing themselves beyond what they thought they could do. We saw them grow in confidence, maturity and kindness every single day. That we were able to offer this opportunity to the students, at no cost to them or their families, made it even more special. They were a credit to their families, to our Academy, and to themselves. We’re incredibly proud of them.”

We’re thankful to the Turing Scheme and our Academy’s support for helping us make this experience a reality. We know its impact will last well beyond the week.
