Justice in Action: Magistrates' Mock Trial Competition
Our Year 8 Scholars, joined by two talented Year 9 students, took part in the Magistrates' Mock Trial competition recently. This was a massive commitment from the group, as the event took place at the very beginning of the break when most people had already started their Easter holidays.
The true highlight of the experience was the trial itself. The students fully immersed themselves in the legal world, playing out both sides of two different cases. They took on various roles, including solicitors, magistrates, and witnesses, acting as both the prosecution and the defence. Seeing them handle complex legal arguments with such confidence and poise was a proud moment for everyone involved. The way they articulated their points and thought on their feet while under pressure was truly impressive.
This experience provided a powerful, real-world link to our British Values, specifically the Rule of Law. By navigating the court process, students gained a deeper understanding of how the justice system protects citizens and ensures fairness for all.
During the event, our students also had the honour of meeting Professor Elizabeth Barnes CBE, the Lord-Lieutenant of Staffordshire, as well as the Mayor. They spoke eloquently about the Academy’s extensive charity work and shared their thoughts on the importance of volunteering and Individual Liberty within our local community.
Assistant Headteacher and Scholars’ Programme Lead, Ms Williamson, was full of praise for the team:
I am so incredibly proud of our scholars. Taking part in a mock trial requires a huge amount of preparation and public speaking skill, and they delivered with such maturity. Even though they were giving up their own holiday time, their energy never wavered. They were a credit to the Academy, especially in the way they mastered the legal arguments for both the prosecution and the defence.
While we did not progress to the next round this time, the team performed fantastically. We are all so impressed by their professionalism and the way they represented the Academy through their legal expertise and dedication.
