River Study: GCSE Geography Fieldwork at Cotton Dell

The first half of our GCSE Geographers headed out to Cotton Dell Nature Reserve today for the first of two planned visits for their river fieldwork. Getting out of the classroom and into the water is a vital part of the course, and today provided the perfect opportunity for students to collect the raw data they need for their upcoming exams.
Throughout the day, students worked in groups to test various hypotheses by measuring river depth, width, and flow rate. Seeing these geographical theories come to life in a real-world setting is so useful for the exam, as it helps students truly grasp the physical processes they have been studying in their textbooks.
The whole Geography team and the supporting staff were incredibly impressed with the group. Despite the changeable weather, the students showed fantastic engagement and their behaviour and attitudes were top notch. They rolled up their sleeves, got stuck in, and represented the Academy brilliantly.
A big well done to everyone involved for their hard work and for making the first trip such a success. We are already looking forward to taking the second group out soon!
