Royal Recognition at Buckingham Palace for our DofE Programme

It was an immense privilege for the Academy to be recognised at a national level this week. To celebrate 70 years of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, we were invited to a special garden party in Buckingham Palace Garden, with Ms Williamson attending to represent the Academy and our personal development provision.
The royal invitation reflects the significant growth and success of the DofE programme at Co-op Academy Stoke-on-Trent. Over the past three years, Miss James has successfully coordinated the award as part of our wider electives curriculum, leading to record numbers of our students taking part in the Bronze Award. We remain deeply committed to ensuring that any student who wants to can access this opportunity, which is why we fully fund the award and provide all the necessary kit, ensuring that financial barriers never stand in the way of participation.
During the morning event, His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, spoke about his own experiences with the award, encouraging guests to ensure young people are supported to use their skills to shape the future. The guests also heard powerful speeches from inspirational figures, including Billy Monger and Gold Award holder Freya, who shared how the award helped her see her disability as an asset.
A key highlight of the morning came when Ms Williamson was able to speak briefly with His Royal Highness to share the success of the DofE Award at our Academy, highlighting the commitment of our young people directly to the Prince.
A sincere thank you goes out to all the staff members who support our students, whether by accompanying weekend expeditions, overseeing skills sections, or volunteering their time. Finally, a special thank you goes to Miss James for her work in driving the programme forward and providing our students with these valuable experiences.
